Cost savings throughCurtailment
Situation
Our client has more than 850 solar panels with a total capacity of about 400 kWp. Due to the energy transition to renewable energy, it is increasingly common for energy prices to be negative. This means that feeding energy back into the grid costs the customer money and contributes to grid congestion. In June 2024, the energy price was negative as many as 9 times, often during weekends when industrial production is partially shut down and there is a lot of solar or wind energy available.
Challenge
How can you proactively set the solar panels so that they only feed back to the grid when prices are positive?
Solution
With the implementation of WattMaestro, the Energy Management System ensures that when the energy prices (e.g. EPEX prices) become negative, feed-in to the grid stops. If prices become positive again, then WattMaestro automatically switches on the inverter. Curtailment, in other words.
Results and impact
In June 2024, the customer had nine occasions when the energy price was negative. The energy produced during these times totalled 7,500 kWh. With curtailment, the customer has for these 9 times € 256 can save.
Additional savings
In addition to the direct savings resulting from curtailment, WattMaestro also offers other services that help end users save further. These include energy consumption optimisation, real-time monitoring of energy production and consumption, and advice on the use of energy storage. These additional services contribute to even more efficient energy management and help our customers achieve their sustainability goals.
Conclusion
With WattMaestro, customers no longer have to worry about feed-in costs when energy prices are negative. This leads not only to direct savings on energy costs, but also to more efficient use of the solar energy produced. Using our system not only helps improve our customer's financial position, but also contributes to a more stable electricity grid.
